Baby Steps

Is is possible to screw up a New Years resolution five days into the new year even if it was completely unintentional? "Yes!" you all answer in resouding tones. "They're ALWAYS screwed up unintentionally."

Well...today, it was not my intention. My intention was that with today being the first WORK day of 2009, I was going to take control. I was going to start fresh. I was going to get organized. I was going to drink water instead of pop. I was going to walk on the treadmill in the morning rather than at night when it completely wakes me up and I can't sleep. I was going to make sales calls. I was going to kick some major butt...starting today.

It started wrong before it was even light out.

D woke me from a slumber in Little A's bed. I vaguely remember stumbling into her room around 5AM and crawling into bed with her. No..I don't just do that. She was having trouble getting back to sleep and I sometimes lay with her a bit. Well...I fell asleep. I fell BIG asleep. D came in around 6:15 when he gets up. He actually had to shake me. I NEVER need to be shaken awake. So I stumbled back to my bed. D comes in about 6:35 and say goodbye. Now..I normally wake up at 6:45, and I'm always awake when he leaves at 6:35 and I always lay there for ten more minutes - not really sleeping - more dozing. Today....apparently I fell asleep. The shrill phone next to my head rings at approximately 7:05. Now...not GREAT cause for panic but Mondays and Wednesdays can be a bit nutty for me and the girls. I leave the house earlier and it was Big A's first day back at school after break. So I felt behind.

Morning progresses - nothing exciting to share - except for the billions of mini-pancakes and waffles I bought for them to eat for breakfast - I forgot to buy syrup. Oh..and I didn't have enough time to make Big A's lunch so she's enjoying cafeteria chicken nuggets today. Not the WORST thing to her - but she would have preferred PB&J. Oh well....

Yadda, Yadda - she goes off to school, Little A goes to daycare, I have a nice relaxing commute to work. Now my day at work was going to go a little like this: a) I was going to catch up on my emails (always), b) I was going to make some phone calls to potential contacts; c) I was going to work on some existing stuff and d) I was going to get everything entered in my computer in my contact management system (i.e. get organized and ready to kick some major butt).

Great concepts right?

So I get to work. I drag my laptop out of it's case and reach in for the power cord to plug it in. Uh-oh...no power cord. When I used the computer at home over the weekend, apparently I forgot to put the cord in with the computer when I was done.

This one little thing completely screwed up my plans for the day.

Ya see - my computer was pretty cheap to buy. It's nice - but not super nice - and it's obvious some things were skimped because of the price I got it for. I have since done some renovations - added memory, RAM, etc. - but the battery, quite frankly, is a piece of crap. I get MAYBE an hour out of a full battery before it's dead. And since my "work life" is currently on this computer (since I work technically three jobs, it's good to have everything a portable device of some sort - i'e. my computer), I have maybe one hour to get all the stuff done that I had planned to do today.

Yeah - wasn't gonna happen.

You'd think forgetting a power cord wouldn't be enough to set off a whole day - and technically, the sleeping in is what started it - because I probably would have looked first before leaving with the computer - but my day was - in the words of Whitney Houston - WACK now.

I've made do a bit. Been taking a bunch of notes with the idea that I'll transfer all my notes to my computer when I get right (Yeah - right! HA HA HA HA!!!) I've drug files out and gotten all the information again. It's been cumbersome and time-consuming but I have been able to be FAIRLY productive. Fairly.

Oh yeah...I forgot to mention although it should seem obvious. I didn't use the treadmill this morning. Nope...didn't happen.

Though I have just started on my second glass of water. No pop thus far.

Baby Steps.

Well at least you have the water! You're doing better than me.

Well Tami, thanks to your inspiration I just poured myself a big glass of water too. :) I can totally relate about the treadmill. I HATE running on that thing in the morning & it's much harder for me so I can't go as long. I am a night person, so I'd rather exercise around 8:00, but then I can't sleep, am awake until 1am and exhausted when the alarm goes off at 6:15. ARGGG!

Sounds like your work day was a flashback to the way our ancestors did things, with actual note taking and paper files. Yikes! May tomorrow be a better, technology-filled day!

This is why my only resolution is to NOT make resolutions. HNY anyways tho!

But you had the best of intentions!
